Let’s face it, no one likes to start an argument; but they may enjoy instigating a compelling debate with some argumentative essay topics.
An argumentative essay can be written about any subject that people can debate; and, when one thinks about it, that could be just about any subject. A high school student, for example, might want to argue that video games are good for kids, in that they develop motor, computer, manual and creative skills. A parent or teacher might wish to write an essay with an opposing view; one which perhaps argues that video games shorten children’s attention spans, expose them to violent content, and take time away from homework and outdoor play.
People typically write argumentative essays about serious, controversial topics, such as abortion, gun control, the death penalty, etc. Yet people today can argue just about anything in writing, from which pizza and sundae toppings are the best to which clothes styles are most flattering for the figure, which animals make the best pets to which films and TV shows are the best. In other words, people can write argumentative essays about anything they care about—anything that gets them fired up enough to write a complete, well-researched, forceful essay.
Indeed, argumentative essay topics can make for the most interesting and compelling essays; ones that make people want to read and respond. You must make sure, though, that the topic you select is worth arguing about—and that you debate it in a thorough, professional manner.
For example, you should never pick a topic like “Murder is bad” or “We should save the environment;” these are obvious statements that few would argue, and that need little backup evidence to prove. Select argumentative essay topics that are complex and even controversial, and present your related viewpoints in a manner that is civil and articulate. Argue, don’t fight; keep your language clean, effective and to the point, and don’t resort to nastiness and name-calling. Also, when forming your argument be sure and stick to the facts; don’t let raw emotion override your ability to reason and to make compelling arguments.
Ultimately, argumentative essay topics should bring out the good ol’ fashioned debater, in both the essayist and the reader. These topics should be original, compelling, and create a discussion that may result in an extended debate; and, hopefully, in the composition of still more great essays for all to enjoy.
